The humble dry erase marker started out life in the sales and marketing industry many years ago, as a replacement for using a permanent marker on large sheets of paper for sales managers or speakers to make illustrations and notes to groups of medium size.

Previous to the dry erase marker, their only choice was to pack in a very heavy chalkboard and use regular chalk, but that was seldom feasible, especially when traveling. Their next choice was a large tablet of paper attached to an easel, on which, notes and ideas were made with a permanent marker or grease pen. On the road for any length of time, a speaker or manager could require 100’s of pounds of paper in the form of tablets of large format paper.

With the advent of the dry erase marker this all changed. Now, ideas, notes and images could be applied to a light weight whiteboard, then easily wiped right off with a dry towel or regular eraser. With the dry erase marker, the white board could be used over and over. With no heavy chalkboard, no messy chalk and no reams of large format paper to deal with, the dry erase marker was an overnight success.

It wasn’t long until educators discovered the dry erase marker for classroom work. First for the teacher in general lectures and lessons, but, eventually, for the student. Since whiteboards were cheap and light weight, even small children could have their own personal 8 ½”x 11” whiteboard tablet to work on using a non-toxic, low odor dry erase marker.

Of course, today a dry erase marker comes in a myriad sizes, shapes & colors. There is no doubt the dry erase marker is the most common type of marker manufactured in the world.
